ECOCamino

What is ECOCamino?

ECOCamino is an application where people who are interested in learning about the environment can visit. It promotes different events that are being hosted around their area that individuals can attend. Registered users also have the ability to create events such as Cleanups and Workshops. To ensure that these events are legit, the hosts of the new events will need to wait for an approval by an administrator of the website. Registered users also have access to a functioning Forums page where many others can have the luxury to talk and ask questions about the Environment. ECOCamino’s goal is to create a “center of operations” for everything that deals with the environment. By having this “center of operations” it saves the hassle for others to manually look for events in different places.

Contribution to ECOCamino

One feature that I was able to produce was landing the page that all users new or existing will be presented every time they load the application up. I was also able to create the top navbar and the footer as you can see in the picture below:

Another page I was able to work on was the resources page. This is where users can learn more information of ways they can help the environment other then attending workshops or cleanups. This page also shows some organizations around the island that we thought would be great for others to know.

A 5 day adventure to success.

There’s always that one saying “Give it your all”. This was in our minds the whole time we started developing this application. Before my group even came up with the idea of creating an environmental community application, we all jokingly told each other, “we can easily win this.” But without us knowing how hard we worked on the application, we were all shocked when we found out that we got 1st place in the Meteor Hackathon. Now I’m not saying that we had an easy time trying to develop something, especially on a 5 day time limit. But the roller coaster of emotions my team had to go through was all worth it. One obstacle that my group had to overcome was understanding how React BOOTSTRAP worked in javascript. We all thought it was a mistake trying a new ui. However, we started to notice how similar it is to Semantic UI. In the first couple of days we struggled to get everything working because it took a lot of time and effort to make sure it would not break if a user utilizes it. In order for my team to create such a complete application, we all committed to meeting on discord every day to make sure everyone is working on something. If it wasn’t for our communication, I would have a hard time believing in our chances of winning. But that wasn’t the case. We all understood the sacrifices we needed to make, whether its putting our other homeworks to the side or even getting less sleep. It made me realize how determined my group really are.

Overall, participating in the Meteor Hackathon was so worth it. (I’m not sure if I would have said that if we didn’t win haha). If it wasn’t for this groups dedication to creating an application to the best of our abilities, I honestly would think we wouldn’t have been able to get every single feature working on time. I can’t wait to see this group participate in the Hawaii Annual Coding Challenge (HACC) very soon.
